Ever stopped in the middle of a conversation, not because you forgot what to say, but because you needed a second to breathe?

It feels small. Easy to ignore.

But when it happens often, you begin to notice it in other situations, too. Stairs feel steeper. Walking feels slower. Even a simple day feels a bit heavier. So what’s really going on?

When should you actually pay attention?

Not every breathless moment is a problem.

But look out for patterns:

  • You’re getting tired faster than before
  • There’s a cough that just hangs around
  • Your chest feels tight, especially at night or early morning
  • You avoid physical effort without even thinking about it

It’s subtle. That’s the tricky part.

What are Pulmonary tests?

A lot of people assume pulmonary tests mean something serious.

Actually, these are basic checks. Quick. Straightforward. No needles. No long waiting hours. Just simple ways to understand how your lungs are functioning.

Let’s break them down.

1. Spirometry — the starting point

This is usually the first test doctors recommend.

You’ll be asked to:

  • Take a deep breath
  • Seal your lips around a mouthpiece
  • Blow out as hard and fast as you can

That’s it.

But behind that simple action, the machine measures:

  • How much air your lungs can hold
  • How quickly can you push air out
  • Whether there’s any blockage in the airflow

It can help detect early signs of conditions like asthma or other lung conditions—sometimes even before symptoms become obvious.

2. Peak Flow Test — quick and repeatable

This one is even simpler. You blow into a small handheld device. It records how fast the air comes out.

Why does that matter?

Because reduced airflow speed can signal narrowing of airways, people with asthma often use this test regularly—even at home—to track changes.

It’s quick. Takes seconds. But gives a useful snapshot.

3. Chest X-ray or Imaging — seeing what’s inside

Sometimes, numbers alone aren’t enough. That’s where imaging helps.

A chest X-ray (or in some cases, a scan) can show:

  • Infections
  • Inflammation
  • Fluid buildup
  • Structural changes in the lungs

You don’t feel anything during the process. You just stand still for a few moments while the image is taken.

4. Oxygen level check — simple but important

Ever seen that small clip placed on a finger? That’s called a pulse oximeter. It checks how much oxygen your blood is carrying. Low levels might explain why you feel breathless, tired, or lightheaded.

No pain. No effort. Just a few seconds.

Why are these tests important?

Because guessing doesn’t help, you might think it’s just fatigue. Or age. Or weather. Almost all liver disorders can be easily managed through early detection.

A quick word about Medivision Labs

If you’re planning to get checked, Medivision Labs is a name many people already trust. They were among the first medical labs in Kerala to receive approval from the Indian Council of Medical Research. Over the years, they’ve grown into a wide network across South India, with multiple diagnostic centres and collection points—all linked to a central lab in Kochi.

With over 1500 tests and modern equipment in place, their focus is simple: give accurate results, without making the process stressful for you.
